The Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute serves as the intellectual hub for neuroscience studies and research activities at the University of California’s Berkeley campus. The Institute’s staff together with several departmental and research unit administrations provide a full complement of administrative services in support of the Institute’s mission.
Financial and Human Resources services are provided by each faculty member’s specific research unit and/or department. Research Enterprise Services provides consolidated services to a plurality of the Institute’s stakeholders. Communications, advancement, and graduate student program coordination is provided by the Institute’s staff.
Financial and Human Resources services are provided by each faculty member’s specific research unit and/or department. Before looking for a specific service, ask the faculty in charge what entity is managing his/her administrative services.
Campus Shared Services Team 9 / Research Enterprise Services provides services for a large number of the Institute’s faculty. For specific information, go to People in RES
For administrative/financial/human resources forms, please go to RES Forms and Resources or to the faculty’s home department/unit Web site.
For Barker and Evans Hall building access requests please use these forms:.
Card Key Access Request
Hard Key Access Request
Q1. How do I find out who to contact about an administrative matter?
A1. Find what administrative unit provides services to your lab. Alternately, ask your faculty member what administrative unit manages his/her funds, since most administrative services are connected to funds management. Once you get the answer, contact the appropriate person/service provider [see Financial and Human Resources Services – Link b. on this admin site].
Q2. Who do I contact to get access to a building and/or lab space?
A2. Each building/lab space has different procedures and personnel in charge. Ask your faculty member who provides building access services. For Barker Hall, in particular, see Forms [Link f. on this admin site]. Please read the guidelines before taking action.
Q3. I am a young faculty, and have a question about academic personnel. Who do I contact?
A3. All faculty academic personnel matters are handled through the home department, not the Institute.
Q4. I am a postdoctoral researcher, and I have a question about academic personnel. Who do I contact?
A4. Ask your faculty mentor what administrative unit provides services for him/her (see Q1/A1).
Q5. I am a graduate student who needs to be paid as a Graduate Student Researcher from my research mentor’s grant/fund. Who do I contact?
A5. Ask your mentor what administrative unit manages his/her funds, since most administrative services are connected to funds management. Once you get the answer, you can contact the appropriate person/service provider [see Financial and Human Resources Services – Link b. on this admin site].
Q6. I am new to the campus. How do I get a CalNet token to set up my email account?
A6. Find the administrative unit that provides services for your lab, then go to https://calnet.berkeley.edu/ and check out under “CalNet Deputies List” (in the left hand links) who are the CalNet deputies for that particular administrative unit.
Q7. What are some of the main services I will need to tap into while working at Berkeley?
A7. See http://berkeley.edu/work/tools.shtml for a general overview; many services are provided by the immediate administrative unit which manages your faculty/program funds.
