We are proud to announce that Berkeley Neuroscience faculty members Chris Chang and Bob Knight were elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Founded in 1780, the Academy is one of the country’s oldest learned societies and independent policy research centers. Members include scientific giants such as Benjamin Franklin, John J. Audubon, Alexander Graham Bell, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking, as well as writers, artists, and leaders from around the world.

Chang and Knight join Berkeley Neuroscience faculty Howard L. Fields, Corey S. Goodman, and Gerald Westheimer in receiving this honor. The new class will be inducted at a ceremony on October 7, 2017, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Please join me in giving them my sincerest congratulations.

New Berkeley Neuroscience Academy members

CHRISTOPHER J. CHANG, PHD
Professor of Chemistry, Class of 1942 Chair, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator

Chang develops new molecules and materials to address specific problems of broader societal interest. The Chang Lab is creating novel tools to study the role of redox-active metals in fat metabolism, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders. In a separate line of research, they are generating new carbon-neutral solar-to-chemical conversion processes that will help to confront climate change and rising global energy demands.

ROBERT T. KNIGHT, MD

Professor of Psychology

Knight studies the contribution of the prefrontal cortex to human behavior. The Knight Lab employs both noninvasive electrophysiological techniques in neurological patients and intracranial recordings from neurosurgical patients to investigate the neural coding underlying human cognition and behavior. These studies are also being applied to the development of brain-machine interfaces for motor and language prosthetic devices to help people with disabling speech and cognitive disorders.
