Entering Graduate Students

  • SIR and PIN. After you file your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) with the University’s Graduate Division, you receive your student identification number (SID) and a personal identification number (PIN).
  • Cal Photo ID. You can obtain your photo ID on Campus at 110 Cesar Chavez Center, Lower Sproul Plaza, with your SID and a photo ID.
  • E-mail - You must set up a @berkeley.edu e-mail account by August. You need to first obtain a CalNet ID which requires your PIN. Then, you sign up for an account at the Berkeley Internet Link. Please the GAO your new @berkeley.edu email address.
  • Fee Payment. Fees are paid by the program, except in unusual cases, and should be in the University system by early August.
  • Registration. To be an officially registered student, you must have your fees paid and be enrolled in at least 8 units of classes. The University will not release any stipend checks unless you are a fully registered student.
  • Enrollment. You will meet with the program graduate adviser during Orientation (one week prior to the beginning of classes), who will help you in selecting specific courses. As this late enrollment might delay your stipend, we recommend you enroll in NEUROSC 291 A for twelve (12) units using the campus on-line registration system TeleBears by August 15th.
  • Adjustment Period. Once you have met with the graduate adviser, you can modify your schedule, add additional coursework and adjust the number of research units downward for a total unit load of 12 units.
  • Summer Research. If you are interested in starting a summer research project, you must locate a mentor willing to accept you into his/her lab.
