Gül Dölen discusses psychedelics as possible treatment for phantom pain on PBS

October 2, 2026

HWNI member Gül Dölen, professor of neuroscience and psychology, was featured on the PBS show “Resolve to Solve with Miles O’Brien,” in an episode called “The Brain, The Pain, and Psychedelics.”

In the episode, science journalist Miles O’Brien, who is also an amputee living with phantom pain, investigates the potential of psychedelics to treat phantom pain. O’Brien visits Dölen at her UC Berkeley lab to discuss her discovery that psychedelics can reopen critical periods for learning in the brain and how this mechanism might allow psychedelics to work as a therapy to alleviate phantom pain by allowing the brain to learn that a limb is no longer there.
