September 12, 2024

Neuroscience faculty member Helen Bateup is part of a team of QB3 researchers from UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, and UC Santa Cruz that has been awarded $12 million from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to investigate the genetic pathways underlying autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Berkeley faculty member David Schaffer, the executive director of QB3, is also part of the team.

The researchers will use brain organoid models, clinical data, and AI tools to discover common pathways, protective factors, and biomarkers for different forms of autism. The project could advance understanding of ASD and lead to new treatments.
