Taking a look inside brains: Professor Na Ji

October 21, 2025

In a profile from the College of Letters & Science, Na Ji, professor of neuroscience and physics, discusses her path from chemistry to neurobiology, and how she uses concepts from astrophysics and optical physics to create new microscopy methods that are helping us better understand the brain, in work supported by the BRAIN Initiative and the Weill Neurohub

The microscopy tools Ji’s lab has created allow for faster, deeper, and higher-resolution imaging of brain tissue, enabling the visualization of neural activity and structures down to the level of synapses, deep inside the brains of living animals. Ji also uses these tools to study how abnormal electrical activity spreads during epileptic seizures, in a collaboration supported by the Rennie Fund for the Study of Epilepsy.
