Richard Ivry, professor of neuroscience and psychology, co-founded Magnetic Tides in 2019 with colleagues from UC Berkeley. The startup has been developing non-invasive brain stimulation technology to help patients recover after a stroke, and potentially treat other conditions such as major depressive disorder.
Their new method, called kilohertz transcranial magnetic perturbation (kTMP), increases excitability in the cerebral cortex, which could indicate an increase in neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to change and adapt. This past summer, kTMP received Breakthrough Device Designation from the FDA for its potential to improve arm and hand function in chronic stroke patients, which will speed development and regulatory review.
