Dear students and colleagues,
We are starting a new year by being confronted with many uncertainties that could include potentially devastating reductions in federal funding for research in higher education settings. We all realize how damaging this would be not simply for our own personal growth but for the innovations in technology and bio-medical know-how that grow the economies of California and the US. As graduate students, you are the next generation of this creative force, and this pushback must be particularly disheartening. While trying not to fall back to platitudes, I hope that my annual message serves as a mini reminder of what makes us strong. First and foremost, you are a very successful group of scientists. Second, we, as a program, will be behind you and will continue to work hard to secure funding for your education and our joint research projects. Third, we, as a program, are also strong because we can recognize our shortcomings and will continue to work on how to improve. I am fortunate to be able to work with our incredible team of program manager, Leleña Avila, and program coordinator, Peony Yu, to continue to achieve these goals. Finally, our community and the University remains committed to promoting diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging.
Our students are continuing to impress us by their achievements. For their successes in 2024, we would like to congratulate first year Daniel Bazan who was awarded the Chancellor's Fellowship and the NSF GRFP; first year Ravi Srinivasan who was awarded the Berkeley Fellowship; second year, Angel Garcia was awarded the NSF GRFP in 2023 (we missed this last year); third year Mars Torres won the 2024-2025 Mentored Research Award; and Sonali Mali won the 2024-2025 UC Dissertation Year Fellowship. Odilia Lu is a continuing Alper Fellow this year. As you might remember, the Alper Fellowship honors students whose research addresses the causes and/or suggests treatments of mental health conditions including major depression, anxiety, or closely related illnesses. Finally, Karina Bistrong received the 2024 Lisa Eshun-Wilson Community Award for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Justice.

The whole program extends a continuing welcome to our first-year students: Daniel Bazan, Kylie Huch, Courtney Kim, Sunjae Shim, Ravi Srinivasan, and Tao Zhang (pictured above). You have been with us for more than 6 months now and we have enjoyed your enthusiasm and hard work and look forward to seeing you become even more accomplished!

We also congratulate our recently minted Ph.D. students: Hayle Bounds, Jacob Ziontz, Erin Aisenberg, Katherine Cording, Marisa Denkinger, Julian Dishart, Xue Lily Gong, Madeline Klinger, and Sylvia Madhow. If you missed their exit talks you can still learn about their research discoveries, future plans, and advice to current students here.
In Chinese astrology, the Year of the Snake is a time for renewal, transformation, and personal growth. It's also associated with wisdom, charm, and intuition. We will need all the wisdom we can gather to make sure the “renewal” in 2025 leads to further positive growth whether it be personal or societal! I am counting on you. Let there be light now and forever.
